Contact Lenses
@ 2009-10-28 – 22:24:06
I don't wear them but I've got some white out ones to wear on Saturday to a Halloween party.
I've got no problems with the theory of putting them in my eye, I don't mind touching my eyeballs! But I don't know how to put them in, if you get me. Do I have to do anything with them before I put them in? Is there a trick to it?

Poems : Why Good or Bad ?
@ 2009-10-28 – 00:01:30
Just wondering : What is the criteria for judging whether a poem is good , bad or indifferent ?
There are many published poets , and many more unpublished ones .
I know just a little about music , films , books and paintings , but I have no idea whatsoever re. how to assess poetry . . -
The Porpoises by John Gurney.
@ 2009-10-25 – 21:45:04
Some weeks ago, I asked had anyone this Poem. Nobody had the full version. I have found it, and here it is.
The Porpoises by John Gurney.
Plutarch would have called it suicide,
some strange ancestral yearning of the school
that drove them to the harbour, past the bar,
then left them, beached and squealing, on the rocks,
abandoned by the quick ebb of the tide
that slides out through the darkness. Here they lay,
bleeding, overheating, as their calls
went whistling to each other through the sea,
the free ones swimming back towards the lost
till they turn were stranded, and the men
came wading from the village, torches high
to finish them with cleavers. After all,
such creatures were the gift of Providence,
pig-fish from the ocean, porpoises
their blunt heads and their countershaded sides
sent in to feed the village. That they lived
as harmless young children on the deep
would court the running hull upon the foam,
rush at it head on, to rub its sides
with amounts of rough vigour - fawned on men,
and lifted them from drownding in the waves,
mourned in deep affliction if they died,
was scarcely to the point. Life was hard,
the women three parts starving, and the beasts
condemed to die, exhausted, by their own
irrational compulsion. Nonetheless
the sheer fact of their killing seems a crime,
intrudes on my awareness every time
I think about creation,on its Cause,
the link with mutilation that distorts
the bond of pure dependence: and at dusk,
especially in the blue gloss of the mud
thrusts above the grey silt of the tide
I feel myself accused, and in my mind
act out my reparation: Drag them down
haul them by the tail flukes or snout
towards the deeper water: hold them up,
their skin tough as rubber, smooth as wrack,
the warm air of their blowholes on my arms,
until, their strength returning, off they plunge
in great leaps past the headland. Watch them go,
the slow heave of their undulating backs
departing like a groundswell through the waves
in synchronised perfection, till they float
at rest beneath the moonlight, with each head
a map of echo-shadows, as they hang
transparent to the uproar of the deep. This is a beautiful, but sad story of something that seems to happen to Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises. The poem captures the reality.

Cleaning a burnt stainless steel pan
@ 2009-10-25 – 10:24:25
Someone in our house was making blackberry jam the other day and left the pan unattended on too high a heat. The pips all sank to the bottom and burned solidly onto the bottom of the pan. Soaking and scrubbing haven't even dented it. We tried leaving it soaking in coca cola for a day and that has also made no difference.
So, does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning this pan?
Thanks, Tom.

How many people will answer this question?
@ 2009-10-24 – 13:33:16
How many people will answer this question?
Better put a time limit on it - by the end of this coming Tuesday, GMT.
Update, Wednesday following close of play:
Result
SeasideMan is the winner!
Strictly he was the only one to answer the question that was asked so his answer of 7 was six out.
But there were 6 responses to the post within the deadline and given that I was unclear as to what constituted a question, it wouldn't be unreasonable to interpret it as responses. By that criterion he was only one out.
I thought there would have been more. Had I responded to my own question instead of just thinking it I'd have been wrong and SeasideMan would have been spot on.
NotBob gets a special prize (getting a mention here) for the best response that (knowingly) didn't answer the question.
Was there really a question?
I was surprised by the number of responses suggesting there wasn't a question at all.
There was.
SeasideMan answered it and, the ambiguity of whether it might have meant "responses" aside, it is easy for anyone to now work out the right answer, which would be impossible if there were no question.
It referred to itself and though it might appear at first sight to be a bit like a snake trying to swallow its tail, it didn't really come into that "This sentence is untrue" category because, strictly, it has a single unambiguous answer (1) (unless you include the number of people who answered it but didn't respond ... ahhhh! I've had enough of this!).

What can't you buy on eBay?
@ 2009-10-23 – 17:55:12
I just thought of a slogan for eBay which is - "If you can't buy it on eBay it's not worth buying". This is a bit jokey and I don't suppose they'll go for it, but I can't remember a time before eBay when things were bought through ordinary channels.

Car question - 1998 Rover 200
@ 2009-10-22 – 08:32:49
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can help. Before I can buy a car seat for my upcoming baby I need to know whether my car (a 1998 Rover 200) has the neccessary 'isofix points' to plug a car seat in to.
Can anyone help? Or tell me where I'd find this info out? A link would be good as I'm hopeless at trawling through the net to find info like this.
Many thanks
14 weeks and counting!

I just wondered, for those of you who like me, like putting lots of piccys on your blogs, do you stream them in from other sites at all, especially when you have used up your media allowance here? I stream them in from photobucket or webshots. What do you use if you do?

How Can BCUK let this keep happening?
@ 2009-10-19 – 23:48:47
Featured blogs right now. Numbers 15,16,17 and 18 are not what I would call blogs, they are selling or trying to sell stuff. BCUK have to sort this before it really puts people off. The whole featured blog criteria has to be looked at.
If you agree add a comment so it may be noticed that us bloggers aint happy with it.
I'm adding this from my post on Palmblogging
his was on 15th of October

No credit? No debt...
@ 2009-10-16 – 23:42:48
It shouldn't be too difficult to imagine a Utopian world where no-one has any debt and no-one can get any credit.
All that you owe - mortgage, credit cards (if you still use them), loan etc - completely written off by the benefactors. For everyone, so no-one owed anyone any money.
But from then on, there was no facility to borrow any either,a nd everyone had to live on what they could earn...
Would this work? And if not, why not?

Computer problems!!!
@ 2009-10-13 – 21:29:59
Router is connected but some sites like bbc will not load ditto parts of blog.co.uk and Google. Have tried rebooting router, turning both networked computers off and on again and reconfiguring the network connections. All seems OK until I try to access a site on the browser (have tried IE and Opera with same result). E-Mail (Outlook Express) is working fine.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong and how to fix it!

starlings.
@ 2009-10-11 – 19:33:25
Every year the starlings do an "ariel ballet". One of the best pieces of film of this was on Autumn Watch a couple of years ago, it was a Bill Oddy film. Absolutely wonderful.
Our local starlings practise the flying over the field next to our house, they swoop and dive, go round in big circular shapes, then they suddenly drop into a tree, and they are gone, out of sight. At the moment there are only about a 100 birds joing in but it will become more.
What I would like to know is WHY?
Are they just strengthening their wings prior to migrating? Except I don't think they do anymore because they are here all year round.

Solution for a bibliophilic amatory conundrum?
@ 2009-10-09 – 15:07:36
Well basically there is a girl I'm rather attracted to in a sort of 'I noticed you from across the room kind of way'. We've spoken several times due to the fact she works in my local library and I had a drunken encounter where I tried to pull her in a night club. I say tried as not having much experience in the 'pulling' field after being stuck in much-too-long-term relationship I bottled it after a few minutes of amiable conversation.
She seemed attracted at first but after several rather stilted conversations over the library counter where I failed to make any progress at growing some balls and asking the question (i just got the damn FEAR!) I'm wondering if asking her out now would seem a bit weird, as in a "Hi, I stalk library assistants" kind of way as its been several months since I first spoke to her and I wouldn't say we are friends or even associates but merely aware of each others existence and I kind of feel like maybe I've missed the boat.
So...should I just ask her out?
Or...should I attempt to get to know her better first?
Or should I just give up on the whole pathetic affair?
Or any other thoughts on the matter are welcome!p.s I'm no longer worried by the 'fear' and I have no problem asking the question I just wonder is it inappropriate? I use that library alot and I don't want to be branded as the 'creepy weirdo' by her and her colleagues.(I couldn't face changing libraries again!)

Nipple piercing?
@ 2009-10-09 – 11:00:12
I am considering getting my nipple/ nipples pierced.
Does anyone on here have theirs done?
Is it really painfull? More painfull than getting your nose pierced?
Do most women get both of their nipples done? Is only getting one pierced a "guy thing"?
I looked at getting my nipples pierced both ways (horizontally and vertically), but my friend says thats risky. Is it? Does anyone have any information on this subject?
Personal stories/ experiences welcome. -

Need help with homework.
@ 2009-10-07 – 20:42:22
I have been given the last line of the poem "Porpoises" by John Gurney.
The line is: "transparent to the uproar of the deep"
The exercise is to write a piece of prose or a poem, using this last line as my first line.
I usually check out the poem and poet on the Internet (Goole it, or Wiki it), neither are ccoming up with proper answers.
The line makes no sense to me, I think I need to read the whole thing to get anywhere with this homework.
My question is, does anybody know this poem?

Can anyone identify this plant for me please!
@ 2009-10-03 – 16:00:00
I have this plant in my conservatory which I acquired as a small cutting from my workplace years ago, but I've never managed to find out what it's called. It's evergreen, and flowers every year about mid to late September.
Click on any image for a larger picture
This is a close up of a flower cluster still in bud - it looks almost as though its made of wax or plastic!

This is a close up of the flower cluster fully open. Each flower in the cluster is about 1cm across, and it produces so much nectar it actually drips onto the floor!

I'd really love to know what it is, but I've never seen it anywhere else in my travels.
Any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Do you have a website?
@ 2009-10-03 – 12:29:08
It is so easy today to build your own website by using sites such as http://www.yola.com/ and http://www.bravenet.com/ and any of the many other sites available and, they are free.
You can build your website about anything that interests you, your hobbies, your pets, your stories, your garden, anything that you think may interest visitors to your place. You will be guided through the site building and by using the many widgets can create a interesting website. I find it interesting and worth having a go.

terrible decision to have to make
@ 2009-10-02 – 17:10:12
26 year old Kerrie Wooltorton , who was physically healthy but said to have an 'incurable personality disorder' and who had attempted suicide eight times previously , swallowed poison then called for an ambulance to take her to hospital .
She arrived in the Norfolk and Norwich hospital clutching a piece of paper signed by her , a 'living will' , which made it abundantly clear that , according to her , she had made an informed decision to kill herself , which she took sole responsibility for , and that under no circumstances did she want any lifesaving treatment , she just wanted to die in hospital rather than alone in her flat .
In your opinion , were the hospital right or wrong to comply with her wishes ?This is one GP's opinion :
