We have gone to Tai Chi classes for more than ten years. Within our group was an elderly lady, very graceful, tall, with hair fastened back into a bun. Walked like a Ballerina. She was a joy to watch, she has been missing for most of the term, we were told today on our last day of the class year, she is dying of Cancer, by the time our classes recommences in September she will have died.
We never conversed with her very much, there isn't time. We go to the Class, do our Tai Chi, go home, so the next Class can start. We know nothing of her personal life or circumstanes, and yet because of shared experience, and close observation, we knew everything about her.
What caused her Cancer? Passive Smoking, she never smoked, but worked in a situation where others did.
Do I have question? Why should someone beautiful be a victim to something so horrible?
Does any ones smoke have the right to kill others? They may have the right to kill themselves. but they don't have the right to take other peoples lives.

First, thanks to everyone who answered my questions about trainers. I have gone with a pair of Asics Track Shoes.
~~~~~~~~~~
My question today is about shampoo.
I have tried loads of different types - Herbal Essences, Tresemme, Head & Shoulders, Tesco, Johnsons Baby, and although I am fine when I first start using them, after anything from a couple of days to a couple of months and I end up with a really itchy head, and I have to start the hunt again for another brand. My latest is John Frieda, which I have managed to use for a good few months, but now I have to change. Again.
So - my hair is dry, frizzy, coloured and I'm 40+ so it has also seen more youthful times.
What does everyone use?
I'm off to see a friend tomorrow who tells me she has never ever had a Pimms. She has lead an obviously very sheltered life poor thing.
It has to be perfect
My own recipe is as follows.
1 large glass jug, 1/3 full of ice.
Slices of Lemon, Orange, Apple, Strawberry, Celery and Cucumber.
1 part Pimms No. 1
2 parts lemonade
Garnished with a sprig of Mint.
The question is do I add a slug of gin too, and do you have a better recipe or an alternative?
So the question is I suppose. Has he died a hero or an end to a shabby ending?
Hello - hope everyone is enjoying summer
What I am asking today (another of my trivial ponderings) is why does the grass on the lawn edges, grow faster than the lawn itself? It drives me mad, we mow the lawns, trim the edges and within a short while - what seems a matter of hours - the edges are sprouting yet again.
Also did you know that adding a wee drop of vinegar to your dogs water, helps stop those brown patches where they wee? I've been doing that this year and not only do we have less brown patches (hubby forgets to add it you see), I notice her coat is much shinier. Coincidence maybe?![]()
Oh just noticed I did a pun! a wee drop indeed!
Hubby has just informed me that I won't be able to download posts from blog to my phone while we are away as it apparently costs £3 per meg - he just downloaded a file for work which was 500 meg and it cost £1500 so he is less than happy. Not my bloody fault, but is there a cheaper way to use my mobile to do this?? There must be something i can get to make it work that doesn't cost so much surely.
Help, or I will be off your screens for 3 weeks, and I don't think going cold turkey will do me any good x
Does anyone here have the hobby of running / jogging?
I am after opinions on running shoes. From the tiny bit of research I have done, most running shoes are extraordinarily expensive, but don't follow thru on high impact support which is the most important issue for me.
I think the best *might* be the Asics gel shoes, but if anyone knows better, I would be grateful for your opinion.
Caution: Although it's not really dirty, please do not read this post if you're sensitive!
Tried to remember my first-ever kiss earlier this morning, and other kisses came back to mind, too. And this question:
How do you prefer your kisses? Slow and tender, or firm and passionate?
Or ... ?
Personally, I prefer slow movements. It's much more exciting when partners allow their lips and tongues to slowly discover each other, play with each other.
What I don't understand (and don't like) is when guys think they need to make their tongues as hard a possible and try to ram it down the woman's throat. What are they doing? Trying to imitate the later-to-follow act?
And YOU?
Late Edit: to make it easier and in order to keep it somewhat clean, let's restrict it to kisses on the lips / French kisses
Why do those with this syndrome only seem to shout out swear words?
If someone with this syndrome never heard a swear word would he/she shout out something else?
Is it known why a certain word would be selected?
And you know they say problems shared.... end up even more confusing, lol.
Five years ago I began studying by distance learning, for a degree. I was healthier in those days and it was hard but great fun and very interesting.
The last few years I have gone downhill fast and studying is no longer 'fun' but a huge chore and I have no interest or motivation to continue.
However, my family are expecting me to get a degree, and every time I try and tell them I'd like to finish and concentrate on my art and writing and generally just relax more, they say 'oh no you can't, you must get this degree!'
Now, it's not as if I am young, or that a degree would get me a job - I know that, honestly,because no one wants to employ someone who has to keep lying down through pain etc - so whats the point?
I dunno, 51 yrs old and feel I have to please others all the time.
What do you think?
Read this post this morning - the writer has a very romantic view of girls, I think.
Made me wonder if we women are more hardend now and have lost much of our romantic antics, whether we just hide our romantic feelings better (as they are less "required" in our modern world), or if we have never been that romantic in the first place and are simply more honest nowadays.
What's your view? And what about guys? Do you think men are romantic, generally speaking?
Two quotes from Rousseau:
"It is unnatural for a majority to rule, for a majority can seldom be organized and united for specific action, and a minority can."
and
"If there were a people consisting of gods, they would be governed democratically. So perfect a government is not suitable to men."
To what extent are these statements correct?
(I was going to post this on AR, but wanted to widen my net)
I'm just wondering how one should define pornography .
A lady who lives in this road asked to borrow my dvd of The Reader , a serious film , certificate 15 , and was shocked by the scenes depicting sex between Hanna ( Kate Winslet ) and Michael ( David Kross ) , which she regards as pornographic .
I do'nt agree at all . The short passionate affair is a major component of the story , and , though you know what the characters are doing , and it may be mildly titilating to watch it's not ( in my judgement ) meant to be seriously exciting , and in those scenes you mostly only see their heads , shoulders and backs , nothing I'd call explicit , and the lovemaking depicted is slow and sensual , not fast or frantic .
The ones exercising their freedom of speech to say things that most of us find unpalatable, or the ones throwing eggs at them? The egg-throwers are effectively saying "You can say whatever you like as long as we approve it". One lot are speaking, the other lot are being violent.
Those egg throwers must be utterly stupid to not realise that this makes the people they are aiming at look like victims. Well done you stupid idiots, well done.
After writing my last post it got me thinking and that is a rare occurance
,
Did your parents when you were a young child ever threaten you with something or someone to make you behave?
Mines was a woman called Maggie Murphy,
Goodness knows where the name came from but it worked,
We used to pass a deralict house and my mum used to say "Maggie Murphy lives in there!"
And to a young child this place was really scary looking,
And if you were bad my parents used to say "Right that's it you are going to stay with Maggie Murphy!"
They would tell you she would never give you food and would hit you all the time and once you went in you never came out again,
And it worked we were genuinley terrified and would behave after that,
That was till we got old enough to know it was just an old abandoned house and ther was no such person as Maggie Murphy
I want to plant some herbs and lettuces directly in a bag of soil in a planting box. I have a feeling herbs don^t need such great soil, so can I get away with a bag of soil not containing peat? And is it okay to mix lettuce with herbs, or do lettuce need a lot more water. I could put the lettuce with my tomato plants.
as you can tell, this is all new for me. Normally all herbs die, or get devoured by slugs, so I am really going to try a bit harder this year.
When I asked a woman friend this question she gave me this answer,
She said,
We started to 'bud' in our blouses at 9 or 10 years old only to find that anything that came in contact with those tender, blooming buds hurt so bad it brought us to tears. So came the ridiculously uncomfortable training bra contraption that the boys in school would snap until we had calluses on our backs.
Next, we get our periods in our early to mid-teens (or sooner). Along with those budding boobs, we bloated, we cramped, we got the hormone crankies, had to wear little mattresses between our legs or insert tubular, packed cotton rods in places we didn't even know we had.
Our next little rite of passage was having sex for the first time which was about as much fun as having a ramrod push your uterus through your nostrils (IF he did it right and didn't end up with his little cart before his horse), leaving us to wonder what all the fuss was about.
Then it was off to Motherhood where we learned to live on dry crackers and water for a few months so we didn't spend the entire day leaning over Brother John . Of course, amazing creatures that we are (and we are), we learned to live with the growing little angels inside us steadily kicking our innards night and day making us wonder if we were preparing to have Rosemary's Baby
Our once flat bellies looked like we swallowed a wholewatermelon and we pee'd our pants every time we sneezed. When the big moment arrived, the dam in our blessed Nether Regions invariably burst right in the middle of the mall and we had to waddle, with our big cartoon feet, moaning in pain all the way to the ER
Then it was huff and puff and beg to die while theOB?says, 'Please stop screaming, Mrs. Hearmeroar ... Calm down and push. 'Just one more good push' (more like 10), warranting a strong, well-deserved impulse to punch the
%$#*@*#!* hubby and doctor square in the nose for making us cram a wiggling, mushroom-headed 10 pound bowling ball through a keyhole.
After that, it was time to raise those angels only to find that when all that 'cute' wears off, the beautiful little darlings morphed into walking, jabbering, wet, gooey, snot-blowing, life-sucking little poop machines.
Then come their 'Teen Years.' Need I say more?
When the kids are almost grown, we women hit our voracious sexual prime in our early 40's - while hubby had his somewhere around his 18th birthday.
So we progress into the grand finale: 'The Menopause', the Grandmother of all womanhood. It's either take HRT and chance cancer in those now seasoned 'buds' or the aforementioned Nether Regions, or, sweat like a hog in July, wash your sheets and pillowcases daily and bite the head off anything that moves.
Now, you ask WHY women seem to be more spiteful than men, when men get off so easy, INCLUDING the icing on life's cake: Being able to pee in the woods without soaking their socks...
So, while I love being a woman, 'Womanhood' would make the Great Gandhi a tad crabby. You think women are the 'weaker sex'? Yeah right.. Bite me.
