Would you rather earn $100,000 when all your friends earn $50,000, or $150,000 when everybody else earns $300,000?

At the moment I think I'd rather earn 100,000 euros while everyone else earns 50,000 dollars.
I'm just a big meanie. I'd buy you a drink though. -

I now earn in a week what I used to earn in two days. My friends are all on far higher wages than me. I don't demand a lot of money for the way I live, but I would like to be able to go out for a meal with them and not have to decide whether I can afford a glass of wine or wonder if my friends will 'help me out'. I'd rather earn $100,000 when all my friends earn $50,000, and help THEM out.

The point is, would you rather be RELATIVELY rich or BETTER OFF by relatively poor...

As long as I have enough for my needs I am happy. If others earn more good luck to them. It would get more difficult only when others are earning more and I have less than what I consider to be my needs. Thankfully I have not been in that position since my mid twenties when I lived in a bedsit with orange walls a purple ceiling and a bed that randomly collapsed!
Hope this answers the question!

I think I am relativly poor most of the time but it definately makes me a better off person because I am kinda better person because of it

A study was done on exactly this at Harvard. Most people say they would prefer to be relatively better off, i.e. scenario 1. Curiously, this changes if the issue is non-monetary, such as the number of weeks holiday a person gets a year.
I'd be happy with option 2, assuming there are no negative economic consequences, such as prices trebling to match the huge salaries!

That is funny about the holidays. I'm gonna ask around about that one, see what people say.

I asked this question around the office:
Would you rather have 2 weeks holiday a year while everyone else has 1 week… or have 3 weeks holiday while everyone else has 6?
This one was a lot more difficult to answer they said, and most of them opted to have only 2 weeks. Bizarre.

AS long as I have enough for my needs why would I worry about what others earn? I sometimes really feel like i'm swimming against the tide of greed...
