  • Do You Think People Are Getting Ruder?

It's my observation that standards of decent behaviour are dropping and I see this as A Bad Thing. It takes no more time to be polite than impolite, and yet many people don't seem to realise that calling each other nasty names and being rude creates an unpleasant atmosphere. It's my opinion that politeness is the oil that greases the cogs of society, and without it smooth running is compromised.

Many of the kids at my local college are shockingly unpleasant to one another for nothing more than a simple disagreement over music or films. For example, there was a conversation in my film studies class last week where someone was asked what their favourite film was and they replied that it was Star Wars. The questioner's response: "well you're a f*g idiot then". Not "I prefer X" or "That doesn't work for me", but straight for the gullet with a sword. So-called adults should be able to handle differences of opinion without resorting to insults and swearing.

The same applies online too. There have been a few posts recently about a lack of community spirit at BCUK and I think a factor in this is decreasing standards of politeness.

So, are people getting ruder, and if they are is it a bad thing?

    Cheers, Tom.

  • supplements

Can anyone recommend supplements they themselves use to boost the immune system to try and prevent colds Lilian

  • Tubigrip Bandages - how do they work?

I've had to dress my knee with a tubular bandage (or, tubigrip) today, due to a collision with a pavement about a week ago.

After looking at the box and learning that the tubigrip supports the injured part, I wondered how it was supposed to work?

    Anyone have an answer?

  • Folic Acid - to take or not?

I'm hoping to try for a baby a bit later this year, and can only get conflicting advise about Folic Acid supplements.

My Dr said they are only necessary from when I try to conceive, the pregnancy books suggest a 3 month period before coming off my contraceptive.

I have a fairly healthy lifestyle but am still classed as overweight, I don't smoke or do recreational drugs and I have a varied (if not always healthy) diet possibly lacking in leafy green vegetables.

Can anyone give their opinion on whether Folic Acid IS worth taking? If so from when? And is it better to take just Folic Acid or one of these pregnacare type all in one pills?

    Help!

  • Cross-referencing

How do I get a word in one blog to highlight so when it is clicked on it takes you to a previous blog? I am rather slow on the uptake, so please don't go technical on me - I really need an explanation suitable for a five year old.

  • How Much Is Your Electricity bill?

Sorry, I know that's a bit of a personal question, but we have just had a bill that staggered us and it seems to be right. We live in a 2/3 bedroom end of terrace house and there is no gas in the village so everything is electric. All our heating is Economy 7 storage heaters. Our electric bill comes to about £100 per month.

How does this compare with your combined gas/electric bill?

    Tom.

  • Polite or Perv?

Had a meeting at Canary Wharf today. I always like going to places where rich people hang out, because there's usually an abundance of hot women around to perv over. King's Road, Chelsea, and Angel Islington are also favourites.

Anyway, as I was letting a young lady on to the bus in front of me today, I got to wondering where the "ladies first" idea came from. I reckon it's probably more to do with politeness than emergency, but then I noticed that my eyes were firmly fixed to her bum.

Could this have anything to do with it? What is the history of "ladies first" - is it polite or pervy?

  • Any Ideas?

    Helloo -

I am trying to remember the name of a TV Program that used to be on BB2 in the 80's.

I think it was on around 18:00

It was a Sci-Fi Game, I cannot rember that much about it bar it had it's own characters that used to Teleport and Shape-Shift, an alien currency, and an alien who was a plant and uses to shake..

  • If I were a Palestinian right now ...

If I were a Palestinian right now I would be asking many questions.

Why are the Israelis bombing us just because Hamas has fired a few thousand rockets at them?

Why does the world talk about a humanitarian crisis in Gaza when all the TV pictures show us living in fairly modern looking houses, dressed reasonably well and obviously not underfed?

How do all the rockets get into Gaza when they say food and other supplies can't get through?

Who is supplying all these rockets to Hamas, and if they know the damage being caused to us by firing them, why do they keep sending them in?

If Israel has closed its border to stop food and supplies reaching us, why don't we get everything through Egypt?

I live next door to a Hamas rocket store and firing site. On the other side is a hospital and a school. We are there to protect Hamas. Why do the Israelis not respect our right to protect our national terrorist organization and keep bombing us?

When one of our women gets hurt in a bomb blast why does it take twenty men to run through the streets with a stretcher, all screaming and shouting and waving their arms like demented monkeys, when normally women are not allowed to be seen in public? Unless of course it makes good TV?

I have lots of similar questions. Does anyone have any answers?

  • the otherside?

i came across this piece which was posted on a forum. this one is by one of the Israelis. well i have to admit everything is centered towards supporting gaza, but to me it doesnt matter who is right or wrong. people are dying and no matter what race they are from, the point is they are dying unnecessarily. here we go: the otherside.

"As I watched TV reports of Israel’s military operation in Gaza, I was struck by the universal concern with the ongoing civilian casualties of the residents of Gaza. I heard various Muslim interviewees calling the situation “a massacre,” and the like. The pictures of the Palestinian dead were comprised of scenes of women and children being rushed to the hospital bleeding.

Watching these TV reports, I was almost convinced that there was not a single Hamas soldier in Gaza, nor a single rocket ever fired on Israeli civilians and, actually, no males living in Gaza, except for the hospital physicians. Apparently, there are also no women or children suffering in Israel, no Jewish casualties, no decades of Palestinian terrorism, and no Iranian weapons and financing flowing into Gaza.

To watch CNN or BBC news, there are only two kinds of people living in the Middle East: Evil Israeli soldiers bent on genocide for no reason, and Palestinian women and children who are 100% innocent and haven’t the slightest idea why the Israeli soldiers are in Gaza.

Some female Palestinian was on Fox tonight and was saying "The Israelis have been starving us and preventing medicines to come into Gaza." Well, my question is: How did all those brand new Iranian rockets get there instead of food, fuel and medicine? But nobody seems willing to ask that question.

    Truly amazing…

I do believe that the Palestinian people are suffering now, and I am saddened by it. It is true that any innocent Palestinian who is used by Hamas terrorists as a human shield and then injured in the war that Hamas started, is a tragedy. Like the various Muslim interviewees on CNN, I too, would like to see all people in the Middle East able to live in peace and freedom. However, unlike the Muslims and their Leftist apologists, I do not believe that Hamas is entitled to have the freedom to use Gaza as a launching pad to mass-murder Jewish families at will – as it has done for the past decade.

I am also saddened by the fact that having Hamas in control of a land situated in Israel’s border has forced Israel to sacrifice its soldiers to stop the rockets from being fired into Jewish homes, schools, and temples. The situation is like having Osama bin Ladin running a country sharing a border with the United States and firing rockets into American cities. Obviously, it is a situation that cannot be allowed to continue.

There are two competing interests in Gaza right now: Israel wants to strike at Hamas and eliminate the Muslim terrorists’ ability to fire rockets into Israeli homes. The IDF wants to do so with minimum civilian casualties. On the other hand, Hamas is interested in maximizing civilian casualties, because the misleading TV pictures are causing anti-Israeli sentiment that they hope will lead to a cease-fire that includes international legitimacy for the Islamic terrorist organization.

To that end, Hamas has stockpiled enormous quantities of explosives in civilian homes and is launching rockets at Israel from Palestinian homes and schools that are filled with children. Every dead Palestinian child brings a trophy for Hamas and for Muslims worldwide: The Leftist media will reward them with even more sympathy for the Islamic cause. After all, if Hamas is able to cause Israel to shoot back at Palestinian homes from where Hamas is firing, the world will love the Palestinians even more.

So far, unfortunately, Hamas seems to be winning the PR war. And it is doing it at the expense of the Palestinian civilian population. No matter, what counts is that the global Jihad is going as planned."

  • Does anyone think Israel has a right to exist?

I personally have in-laws there that survived the Holocaust and
are grateful there is one place on the planet they can be proud to
    be Jewish.

If not, then where do you suggest all of the current inhabitants go?

  • Work bloggers: do you feel guilty?

Some people here seem to spend most of the day blogging whilst technically at work.

Anyone feel guilty about being paid to work but having fun instead?

    Cheers, Tom.

  • another one to get with ease.

What links these two well known people?

    thequeen

    keef

EDIT- The answer, as first got (but given in her normal borderline criptic way) Rubychoo and then more directly by JBaby is that Keef was in the choir at the Queens coronation!

So that is two things I have in common with Keef- we are both ex choirboys and we have both been known to dress as pirates........

  • Who here supports Israel in the current troubles?

It's been the hottest topic at BCUK for days now, and I think I've only come across one person who seemed to think righteousness was on the Israeli side. So, can we increase the count from 1?

Those supporting the Israeli actions in Gaza, please identify yourselves!

    Tom.

  • who said war is chivalrous????

    They make war look chivalrous---

The silence was stretched taut- for a moment we hoped that it would end, for a moment we hoped that it would stop- or it had indeed stopped but the silence had been stretched taut and the fabric tore.

We dared to hope, perhaps that’s where we went wrong. We dared to hope, for what is life if there is no hope? What is hope however if there is no life and no purpose to it? Its just hope- that’s a lesson I learnt. Its just hope, something to propel your senses, soothe your mind and HOPE for the best because you have naught else to do. we pray and hope to an invisible force hoping to be alive when dawns radiance filters through the layers of smoke, when dawns radiance manages to light up the world, but how many children have died hoping to live, how many mothers have watched their husbands and children waste away before their eyes- how many of you have felt it?

Felt the raw turbulence etch into the atmosphere when you RUN for your lives- but where to? Where can you run when you have no place to go? The houses you built with your sweat and labor are now filled with walls congealed with blood, the houses you return to after a hard days of work are no shelter- its terror that dominates you such that you cannot look forward to going home. What if it wasn’t there when you returned? What if you went in and never returned? But where else will you go? Where else can you go?
Have you ever felt that? Have you ever felt displaced when you’re running to a place where you can hide from the ugly ways of the world and there isn’t one? When there’s no where to run? No home to go to? Or what if you have to run from your homes…and where will you go???
    They make war look chivalrous….
They try to justify the death of a thousand people with their pathetic reasons.
Tell me what gives you right over our lives? Are we not like you, living simply or trying to simply live when YOU decide to kill off an entire nation for your “justified reasons?”
Tell me how justified is a war, if YOU kill a hundred thousand not just in flesh but in spirit for YOUR causes- its OUR lives which are forfeit for YOUR causes.

And the make war look chivalrous…
To whom I ask you. TO WHO IS WAR CHIVALROUS?

The crickets chirp on a silent night, silence stretched taut, I’m a thousand miles away from home contemplating your incapacity for figures other than death rates, waiting for that moment when the silence will shatter with a war that they made look chivalrous…what do I hope for? Nothing…for what’s life when you know that hope just a lie? Nothing…and that’s what I live…
