  • muddlesome apostrophes

" U2 drummer Larry Mullen says Tony Blair is 'a war criminal ... I think he should be tried' , and castigates the band's creepy frontman , Bono , for snuggling up to our war-mongering ex-PM . Friend-of-Statesmen Bono says Mullen and other critics are 'cranks carping from the sidelines' . "
    - From the 'ephraim hardcastle' column in todays Daily Mail .

Is the apostrophe in ' the band's ' correct  ?
I've more than once been criticised for my apparent incorrect use of apostrophes in my blogs ( or should I say 'blogs , as it's an abbreviation of weblog ? ) , and , I  admit , that when to and when not to insert apostrophes sometimes confuses me , and I've until now been afraid to ask !
So , not that really matters that much anyway , but can anyone give me  one or two easily rememberable rules of when , and when not to use apostrophes ?

  • Eye,eye!

Anyone know a good cure for a sty in the eye?

Jade has gotten up for the past couple of mornings complaining of a sore eye.

It was all red and swollen this morning.

I have heared of the old wives tale of the gold ring.

But does that really work?   :D xx

  • What would you advise your friend to do?

I noticed this question recently and it made me think.

There is no 'Don't know' option, so please give the answer that best represents your view.

Imagine that your friend's aunt is falsely claiming social benefits and she doesn't know if she should report her aunt to the police. She is really close to her and she has been an important support since her parents died 10 years ago. She tried to talk her out into not claiming the social benefits but her aunt refused. Your friend is certain that her aunt would never talk to her again if she found out your friend betrayed her. What would you advise your friend to do?

  • You will all know this coz you is so smart.

But I will ask you anyway.

What wasthe first man made thing to break the sound barrier?

  • A World resolution.

What would be your choice for a New Year resolution for all of the people in the world?

  • female genius

If , on the spur of the moment you were asked to name someone who was or is a genius , you might think , for example , Leanardo da Vinci , Mozart , Shakespeare , Abert Einstein  . . .
Who obviously were all men .

Can you name one or more , deceased or living woman who you'd classify as a genius , and tell us why ?

  • Christmas greetings.

Xmas greetings Pictures, Images and Photos

To all ask or answer group friends and visitors, old ones and new ones, thank you for the many questions and answers that often made me think, and for the many comments that have given me everything from a smile to a belly laugh, you have made this group a lot of fun.

May you have a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

    Trevor.

  • manners

If someone who is visiting you in your home , who you know a bit but not exceptionally  well receives a personal call on their mobile whilst chatting  with you , is it good manners to leave the room to let them talk in private ?

Or is it bad manners of them to break off for a private phone conversation during their visit to you ?
Or should we all just be as relaxedly easygoing about everything as we possibly can ?

  • How Old

How Old do you Feel ?

  • misheard lyrics

Do you have any favourite examples of misheard song lyrics ?
The ones I can think of are : My Simple Heart by the Three degrees sounding like 'Bicycle Hut '    ,      There it is by Shalamar sounds like 'Ferret Ears'     ,          Airport  by  The Motors sounds like  ' eff off '        ,            and I used to think  ' we're  caught in a trap . . . '  from Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds was ' we're calling a tramp ' .
Also Gladys Knight's 'Bond theme Licence to Kill  sounds like ' Licence to Kilt ' .
For all younger readers sorry these are such old examples , but , can anyone  think of any other bizarrely misheard lyrics ?

( I posted this question on my previous blog about a year ago . )

  • Why Afghanistan ?

As you've probably heard , the plan seems to be to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq , and to greatly increase their numbers in Afghanistan .
Every week we hear of more British military casualties  there .
I heard someone suggest that Osama Bin Laden all along intended to draw allied forces into Afghanistan , where they can be killed off one by one which seems to be happening .
What is the plan , and what difference will thousands , or tens of thousands of extra troops make ?
And are'nt the Taliban , or insurgents , call them what you will always going to re-form and resume their activities  ?
I do'nt know much about this , hence my asking questions here , but did'nt the Russian army have to ignominiously admit defeat there after  protracted battles  , a couple of decades  ago ?

What is the U.S and British prescence there all about ?
Defending oil and gas supplies ,  supposedly trying to prevent further terrorist attacks in Western countries ,  protecting women opressed by the Taliban , or what  ?

When HRH Harry was stationed there  he wore a baseball cap bearing the slogan ' we do bad things to bad people ' : But are'nt there also ' bad people ' causing misery in numerous other countries ( Zimbabwe comes to mind ) - ?
    So why Afghanistan ?
I think we should be told , and that there needs to be  open , independent inquiries not just into how and why and under what pretences we became embroiled in Iraq , but also into what exactly we've achieved and hope to achieve in Afghanistan .

  • Eighties reformation

Next year sees the return of Ultravox and Adam and the Ants. Paul Weller has (wisely??) declined an invitation to re-form The Jam.

I'm going to all 14 Ultravox dates in April.

Does anyone else see the point of this phenomenon?

Witnessed ABC, Heaven 17 and the Human League recently on the Steel City tour. HUman League were the best, and slightly less sh*t than the times i've seen them before.

  • The Wizard of Blog

According to BCUK I should make the conversion to the "New Design Wizard"

I know I'm only a click away but the phrase "Begin the activation process" strikes fear.

I believe this action is non-reversible and I'm a bit nervous about taking this step and would like some advice from my fellow bloggers.

So, in plain English, why should (or shouldn't) I go for it?

  • The worst song ever

Which is the worst song ever in your mind?

For me, it's Celine Dion's horrible "Titanic" song. I loathe it! To my ears, she screams rather than sings. Whenever that song comes on the radio, I switch stations or turn it off.

    What about you?

  • Hallelujah ( ? )

    http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/leonardcohen/hallelujah.html

Though I do'nt watch talent-shows I've seen Alexandra Burke's stunning performance of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah on YouTube , and downloaded the single from play.com

I've not heard Jeff Buckley's interpretation , which some prefer , but Alexandra's performance is  moving and awesome .

However , can anyone explain its lyrics to me ?
Apart from that , obviously , it has some religious significance ?

  • What was Number 1 on your Birthday

    A bit of fun.

Assuming there were charts available when you were born, what was Number One in the charts on the day you were born :?:

If no charts are available then have a hug and keep warm this winter. Actually you can pick what song you would of liked!

The rest of us young ones must stick to the official chart.

  • Should the supply teacher have been "disciplined" for denying Santa?

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/poll/2008/dec/12/teaching-christmas

"A supply teacher who upset primary school pupils by telling them Father Christmas did not exist has been sacked. Did the headteacher do the right thing?"

"When excited youngsters became rowdy as they talked about Santa, the supply teacher blurted out: 'It's your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day"

"Mothers and fathers then complained about the incident and were sent a letter by the school saying the substitute teacher, who only worked at the school for one day last week, has been disciplined.

The school has now said it will not hire her again"

I know this has appeared on a few people's blogs, but this seems like a good place for a poll. So:

Were the school right to do this? Yes or no - you decide!

    Cheers, Tom.

  • Blog Bullies

Is there such a thing as a Blog Bully?

If so what is a Blog Bully?

    Let me expand:

If someone made regular visits to your space/group and with intent made negative comments, disagreed, made irrational jumps of logic to the point where they accuse an individual of being or supporting some very unsavoury views - would that make them a bully?

Is it acceptable behaviour to swagger around blog land in some attempt to raise an intellectual point at the expense of others views, beliefs and feelings?

It is OK to raise commment that is the whole point of them being there. It is OK to disagree.

Is it OK to make a point of disagreeing of selecting paticular targets simply because you do not share their views?

Has anyone here been on the recieving end of such treatment?

How did it make you feel?

What did you if anything do about it?

Perhaps you were bullied at school by other children or a teacher, to than have to suffer similar treatment in adult life would be distressing!

What would you think if you had a friend who acted in the above manner?
    Would you condone their behaviour?
    Would you say anything?

I suppose the questions at the heart of this is, Why do people feel the need to be bullies? Do they even realise the upset they cause? And by asking these questions, does this in some way make me a bully?

    14 Questions.

  • stolen beauty....?

dont you agree, i know this sounds silly, blasphemous even but dont you think science has robbed away the beauty of nature?
im not saying that scientific advancement isnt a great thing, it is in fact. to be able to understand the world around you makes a world of a difference but what of the beauty of it? the moon is just a rock with craters, the sun is just a ball of fire, the stars are DISTANT balls of fire...blah blah...but what about the beauty of it? thats something equations will never give nature...dont you agree?

perhaps its psychological, humans dont tend to think beyond. so the english alphabet starts with ABC. the end. if there is any wonder its directed to the wonder that humans have discovered something that was always there and not the discovery itself. so...we all have heard of the Fibonacci sequence, but why not think of how wondrously flawless nature is? no instead we tend to dwell on our own accomplishments...

there is so much wonder in the world but so little people to admire it...sad isn't it? i think this sonnet by john donne says a lot:

Why are we by all creatures waited on ?
Why do the prodigal elements supply
Life and food to me, being more pure than I,
Simpler and further from corruption ?
Why brook'st thou, ignorant horse, subjection ?
Why dost thou, bull and boar, so sillily
Dissemble weakness, and by one man's stroke die,
Whose whole kind you might swallow and feed upon ?
    Weaker I am, woe's me, and worse than you ;
You have not sinn'd, nor need be timorous.
But wonder at a greater, for to us
    Created nature doth these things subdue ;
But their Creator, whom sin, nor nature tied,
For us, His creatures, and His foes, hath died.

  • What's the difference...

  • how does the sky paint himself? :O

ive always wondered at the colors the sky paints himself with...its wonderful really, the sun rise and sun sets drape the sky in unimaginable colors, how? is there a scientific explanation to this? dont mind the ignorant....im a science mute...:)

lolz...i wrote a book on this hehe....SKY ABOVE, HELL BELOW. :) ofcourse..its purely fantasy...but does it have anything to do with the suns rays?

  • So who knows what RWP stands for?

(And I mean in the sense of a threaded discussion site like this)

    -----

    It means:

    Response to Wrong Post

This is when someone replies to the head of the thread rather than to the specific comment they are responding to. This has two chief effects:

    1. the discussion becomes disjointed, especially if very long

    2. the person to whom the comment is directed doesn't get emailed to tell them that there has been a reply.

Of course, if your intention is to reply to the head of the thread then all is well :-)

  • Someone just said on the radio that Santa Claus isn't reall!

  • Are you surprised that Obama is a multiple liar?

(All the text between the lines below shamelessly copied from Nancy's blog - I thought this needed wider exposure)

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    http://oldmaid.blog.co.uk/2008/12/09/as-i-predicted-before-the-election-obama-is-turning-out-to-be-two-faced-liar-and-closet-conservative-5190437#c8493213

Obama vowed--swore up and down to the people who voted for him--that he would tax windfall profits of the oil companies.

What does the man say now that the election is over? No, he won't do that at all.

He outright promised the voters that he would definately repeal Bush's tax cuts for the rich, and roll them back to cover the middle class. What does mr. President-elect say now? That he'll merely let them expire in 2010. Now he's done a complete about-face, and he seems to be accepting the conservative's viewpoint that tax cuts for the middle class, and more taxes for the rich, is better for the economy.

One of Obama's biggest stances that seperated him from all other candidates, was his opposition to the war in Iraq. He outright promised to begin the withdrawl of troops on his first day of office. So--will he? Not quite, apparently.

Now, he has told the press that he wants to “design a plan for a responsible drawdown,” and, he's filled his war cabinet with pro-Iraq war supporters, and not with a single person who actually wants to see an end to the war.

He won over labour support by saying that he supported an effort to force companies to acknowlege that it's workers had a right to have a union--but having workers sign a card stating they want a union--if enough workers signed, the company would have to let them have their union. Now, workers in the labour movement are worried, because Obmama has suddenly gone mum about the whole idea---"card, what's a card?" seems to be his basic stance now.

And, all these people he made his "promises" and "pledges" to, they're getting seriously pissed off. One major supporter even went so far to ask if the liberals were ever going to get an actual democrat in the White House, their perception being that there is not a single liberal on Obama's cabinet, and that Obama is more and more looking like George W. Bush, and less like the Obama we all elected.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

My view: not at all surprised. As I said to Nancy "I still do keep getting surprised by the general public's gullibility. Politician's want nothing but to keep getting elected and they'll talk whatever pile of crap will give them the biggest chance of doing it. I wish people would learn this"

Career politicians want re-election and nothing else. They'll tell whatever lies they have to in order to gain re-election.

    Cheers, Tom.

  • legalize assisted suicide ?

I watched a program on tele this evening, it made me think a bit.

I, luckily, am in reasonably good health and can look after myself, but, what happens when I get to the day that I can not?

I do not want to die yet but I am well aware that it will happen one day, I am not scared of dying and would hope that I could be able to, in my own home, when I wished or thought that it was time. Yes, I accept that stringent rules and regulations would have to be in place, but, I don't believe this to be beyond the wit of the lawmakers.

I am very much in favour of the legalisation of euthanasia. I do not wish to have to travel to Holland or Switzerland where it is legal.

I know that at the end of a long, often painful terminal illness many doctors will be generous with the diamorphine, and I commend them for their bravery in doing this, but that is usually after a long period of pain for not only the dying person, but the family that have to wait for the end.

Why not legalize assisted suicide in the UK now?

  • Did you know this?

Did you know that recent Government legislation changing the Freedom of Information Acts gives you access to speed camera offences registered within the last twelve months and placed on a freely accessible website?

Did you know that every time your car goes even over a mile or so over the speed limit, it is registered and placed on the database?

They only send a ticket if you are way over, OR (and here is the rub..) if you receive over 20 'near misses'. You can now check how many you have against your car's registered number.

    Check this page: http://www.i-database.co.uk/

When you are on the page, follow the on screen instructions.

There is a 'click-on' button which shows the picture taken, which you are freely able to view.

Should find it pretty useful, I did.

why is it that when you have made up your mind not to let this certain "thing" get the best of you (in my case its depression) and you actually feel like your moving on, it comes back BANG BANG BANG! and your back to square one?

have you ever felt this way???

  • Want a Christmas present?

    My dear friends,

Somewhat embarrassing to admit, I'm not getting an annual bonus and
Christmas is tight this year. I will be making bedroom slippers for you
all as gifts. Please let me know your sizes. You'll most likely agree
that it's a splendid idea, and should you wish to do the same, I've
    included the instructions below.

How to make bedroom slippers out of maxi pads:

You need four maxi pads to make a pair.
Two of them get laid out flat, for the foot part.
The other two wrap around the toe area to form the top.
Tape or glue each side of the top pieces to the bottom of the foot part.

Decorate the tops with whatever you desire, silk flowers (this is most
    aesthetically appealing), etc.

    These slippers are:
    * Soft and Hygienic
    * Non-slip grip strips on the soles
    * Built in deodorant feature keeps feet smelling fresh
    * No more bending over to mop up spills
    * Disposable and biodegradable
    * Environmentally safe
    * Three convenient sizes: (1.) Regular, (2.) Light and (3.) Get out the Sand Bags.

I've attached a photo of the first pair I made so that you can see the
    nifty slippers for yourself....

Awaiting your response. It's crucial that I get the right size for each
    one of you.

This morning a very dear friend of mine sent me this quote:

"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said that it'd be easy, they just promised it would be worth it." Unknown

    So the question is:

Did you wake up with any regrets this morning?

  • Can a man write to another man and sign it xoxo ?

I had a 5-hour debate about this with a YouTuber earlier today.

She recommended I end my messages to male friends "Peace, Man!"

Then we went through the whole Shalom thing etc etc (yawn)

I have started to write to male friends xoxo now but I feel I also have to tell them I am not gay.

Then I have to say... but I'm not homophobic either.

Why is life so f*cking complicated?

  • effortless elevation

I recall , at school , when we were about 12-ish , there was a craze for getting someone to lie on the floor , with two or three people crouched either side of them , chanting something - I remember not what - then effortlessly lifting them about 3 - 4 feet  in the air , using one finger each .

Do you remember anything like that from your childhood , and/or do children do this now , and I know that most kids of that age do'nt weigh a lot , but how come they were so easily able to one-fingeredly lift up one of their contemporaries ?

    ( I know I'm not imagining this having happened ! ) .

  • O J or B G

Who is more deserving of punishment. O J Simpson or Boy George? Why :?:

  • Smileys on comments

How do you get smileys on comments/replies to comments? Thought I'd figure it out eventually, but I still haven't succeeded.

  • Problem

How can I stop getting the error message whenever I want to post a blog that I'm using Ads or something. I'm not using ads, I've removed every hyperlink, every font, done it in plain text... everything. Same message again and again. Annoying thing is it only seems to be this one thing that I'm trying to post. I posted a blog that just said 'test' and it was fine. Grrrr.

  • Girls Aloud & Coldplay: Perfect Match?

News from the BBC tells us that Girls Aloud are going to support Coldplay at one gig next year. (Why they need to, I don't know!)

This may seem unlikely. Though looking at their lyrics and inexplicable popularity, is it actually a match made in heaven?

    And...

What is the difference between Girls Aloud and Coldplay, anyhow?

  • Would you throw a lifeline to a drowning friend?

If you were stood on the river bank looking down at the raging torrent
and you saw a friend or family member splashing around fighting for
    their life, would you......

    a) throw them a lifeline
    b) ask if they were doing OK
    c) watch and wait a while to see how they got on
    d) carry on as if you hadn't seen them

A simple enough question, you would think,
But what would your reaction be?

    Pray tell me your answers.
I will relate this to actual situations we can find ourselves in.

    Looking forward to your comments.

  • Where is a nice warm but not too hot place to go in January?

I have been told I am being taken on holiday in January

The choice is mine so I am after suggestions.

I like  nice scenery, warmth but not scorching, I like looking round churches etc.
Like nice restaurants and bars, but not anywhere thats too commercialised and noisey. A beach and or pool .

Oh and I don't like too long flights

    Any Thoughts please :))

  • Christmas Music

    Seriously, honestly...

Does anybody actually like Christmas Music?  Not Carols, but the pop songs that you get on compilations every year, the Slade, the Mariah, Wham - the stuff that managers insist on putting on at the office Christmas party.
I have a strong feeling that the whole industry is fuelled by a sort of groupthink mentality where NO ONE likes the music but it's put on anyway because, well it's Christmas.  Personally it's the only thing that ever comes close to ruining Christmas for me.  Thankfully this year the commercials have avoided the usual obvious songs (I'm thinking of Asda, Tesco and Waitrose)... though the shops are still after my soul...

  • What card? The answer.

My thanks to all that participated in a little experiment that actually proved absolutely bloody nothing except that you were all good sports.

Some good guesses and comments but no one got it right, Why should they have done? I suppose that the odds were 53 to 1 ( if you include the joker ), but, it was a Sunday with nothing on the television and I had done enough housework, well, I had vacuumed the carpet, but I genuinely did it, OK, to be very honest, the card was facing me instead of the computer but I was staring at it and trying to transmit my thoughts.

The card reminded me of a event some 60 years ago when it was a normal Sunday after dinner thing, that dad, mum, sisters June and Ann and myself played cards. Dad was being clever and reversing the name of the card, so, four of clubs became clore of flubs, seven of diamonds became devon of simonds, and so on.

All went well until he came across the card that I was hoping that you would guess, now, if you remember, this was back in the 1940s, an innocent time, especially with three kids aged 11, 10, and 8 years old.

The card was, the FIVE OF HEARTS.
