One of the accusations against the Templars was the worship of a skull.
Throughout much mythology the skull was revered and taken in battle and used as a tool of prophecy.
The early Britons had the skull of Bran and this spoke of the future of the land.
From a more modern perspective it was specifically the head of John the Baptist that the Templars were said to be in possession of. As crystals have scientific properties it makes sense that the material would be used in the shape of a skull. -
They have been around since the 30's or earlier. Explorers came back with them from various places, claiming them to be ancient Inca/Aztec/Alien artifacts....

Most of the ones held in museums today (and the British Museum has one that they will be getting out and back on display because they hid it away) are quite probably fakes and not as old as they are claimed to be. Most of the well known ones where maybe made in the 19th century. But the recent film featuring a fella with a whip has made the museums think now is a good time to get them out again.
But, for your information and further fun - This months edition of "Fortean Times" has an article on them, and you could always wander the net and be amazed at the frankly excessive theories about them.
And when you get to the one about the eight true crystal skulls being an ancient super computer and talking to us when they are all gathered together, run!
