The seventeenth youngster to be killed in London this year was sixteen years old and drinking with friends in a pub at 2 oclock in the morning. What were his parents thinking? There is no excuse for this tragedy but it could have been prevented with old fashioned common sense.

Aircraft history
Where can I look for the history of a jet aircraft?
I know the Model the date it was flying and its corporate name at the time.
Should we elect our Judges?
Is there an argument for or against the election of judges by the public?
Should judges have more or less power?
No Flies On Him!
How intelligent is the Common House Fly?
I have one in my kitchen right now! I use an old badminton racket as a fly-swat. The fly was lazily winging up and down the room no doubt looking for food. As soon as I produced the "fly-swat", he hid. I searched in vain. When I put the swat down he starts flying again. I pick up the swat, he hides! I wait. He reappears. I swipe! He dodges and swerves as though he knows I am after him! He hides again. This has been going on for 30 minutes!!
Is he watching me? Trying to wear me down? Who knows what he is up to while I'm writing this?
How famous?
How famous do you have to be before you are assassinated as opposed to murdered?
Locust Beans - A post-war delicacy.
Does anyone remember Locust Beans? (At least I think that's what we called them.)
Just after World War 2, when food was scarce and sweets were on ration, we kids sometimes had them as a treat.
They were shaped like a flattened banana, had a hardish shiny brown skin which you had to break off. Inside was the soft yellow flesh which you ate. The fruit was very sweet but had a disgusting smell.
Since I grew up I've never met anyone who remembers them.
If you're too young, please ask your granddad or aged aunty.
What is the best "bundle" deal?
Two years ago I joined up with NTL for broadband, telephone land-line and digital television at a cost of £40 per month.
Since then, somehow I have become a member of Virgin media and the cost is now £46 per month.
I make very few telephone calls, I only need access to the free digital TV stations, and of course broadband.
Would I get a cheaper deal elsewhere?
Ponds and Lakes
We have a body of water close to my office which is too big for a pond but seems too small for lake.
So at size does a pond become a lake?
How long should it take to pass a driving test?
I've just re-started lessons after a 12 year gap, al I can afford is 2 hours a week with an instructor, and I don't have any family or friends that could give ne extra lessons.
Can anybody give me an idea how long I should expect to be taking lessons for?
I'm aware there are lots of variables on this one, but I've a lot riding on passing my test, so any help I can get on this.
Thank you
Science Question
Something I've never quite understood, or was told the answer and subsequently forgot:
Why does water expand when frozen?

Why would you "Want To Believe"?
On the X-Files, Special Agent Fox Mulder had above his desk a poster with what looked like a traditional Flying Saucer image on it, accompanied by the text “I WANT TO BELIEVE”.
A very simple question:
Why?
Why would you “want to believe”?
Tom.
Dumbing down?
Extract from a review (in the New Statesman, no less) of Robert Peston’s book, ‘Who runs Britain? How the Super Rich are Changing our Lives’.
‘In an impenetrable sentence, he explains: “This [the Gini Coefficient] is a measure of income inequality that condenses the distribution of income inequality into a number between zero and one, where the zero corresponds to a world in which all households have identical income, and one would be a place where all the income goes to a single person.” Whew! All this to prove how the rich become richer and the poor poorer.’
Now, I’m no fan of Peston, and admittedly I’m the queen of geeks, but to me, that sentence is explaining a perfectly straightforward concept in a clear and informative way. So, my questions are these:
Am I alone in thinking this sentence is perfectly ‘penetrable’?
If the reviewer is so clueless about basic mathematical concepts, why did the NS ask him to review this book?
And why is it apparently acceptable for him to parade his ignorance in this way, when to make similar comments about, say, the value of Shakespeare or Jane Austen would (rightly) be considered beyond the pale in a serious journalist?
Math Question!
how many different seven number combinations could you get from seventeen numbers?
Why is there no.....?
Why is there no written constitution for Great Britain?
Should there be a British Constitution?
If so, What should be in that Constitution?
How can I kill....?
Does anyone know what will kill a Woodlice?
God only knows where they are coming from but an increasing amount appear to wish to stroll across my kitchen floor.
My hope is for info on something that could be sprayed around the edges of the kitchen floor to kill, or at least deter, these invaders.
Scots may know these as "slaters".
Found the following through google but it does not tell you how to kill them.
Common names for woodlice vary throughout the English-speaking world. A number of common names make reference to the fact that some species of woodlice can roll up into a ball. Other names compare the woodlouse to a pig.
Names include: "armadillo bug" [2], "cheeselog" (Reading, Berkshire) [3], "doodlebug" [4], "pill bug" (usually applied only to the genus Armadillidium) [2], "roly-poly" [5], "potato bug"[5], "roll up bug" [6], "slater" [7], "Carpenter", "Wood Bug","sow bug" and, commonly used by the Duffs in Plymouth (South Devon), "Mennaces". [4][5].
In north Devon and north Somerset, England, a woodlouse is traditionally referred by the quaint name "Chuggy-peg", "Chuggy-pig" or "Chuggypig". [8]
In Altona, Victoria, Australia. A woodlouse is referred to as a "Butchie Boy", or "Butcher Boy", or "Slater Bug".
Military Service
I was speaking to my lady friend yesterday, and she was telling me how while waiting for me in town she witnessed a group of Chavs/hoodies/whatevers bullying and tormenting a man. She said the man was clearly a "simpleton" or in someway challenged as his efforts to put them off were rather pathetic and he couldn't get his words out. She felt horrified that people could act in this way. She suggested military service for these offenders, or compulsory military service for everyone anyway, saying it gives people a place in society, a sense of discipline etc etc.
What do you guys think? Should young offenders be sent to the armed forces? Should we all do military service?
“Hoodies”, Are they all so bad?
“Hoodies”, Are they all so bad?
Do we tend to “tar them all with the same brush”?
To me, “Hoodies” look ridiculous in their choice of street clothes, to the older generation at the time I probably looked the same in my choice of style. Yes, some look threatening, some are bad, but the majority are certainly just normal teenagers making their own way through their early teenage years.
Since the 1940s every decade has produced its own brand of teenagers with their own style, Teddy boys, Punks, Flower people, etc, Did this make all of that generation bad?
Any “hoodies” out there with their story to tell?
UK ' Child Poverty' - ? ?
What on earth are UK politicians on about when they go on about ' child poverty ' in this country ?
We all distressfully know what that means in countries such as Ethiopia , but in the UK ?
Surely any ' child poverty ' here is the fault of irresponsible parents spending most of their money on alcohol , cigarettes , drugs , gambling , and surely should'nt our politicians be formulating ways to address that , rather than bleating on about ' Child Poverty' as if , in this prosperous Nation , that's something we all should feel ashamed of ?
Illegal Music Downloading and the new Coldplay Album
I’m sure all you pop fans are eagerly waiting to get your mitts on the new Coldplay album Viva la Vida, which gets released here next week. Or perhaps not, because the whole thing has been on youtube for the last week so lots of you have probably downloaded it already.
So, here is my first of two questions:
Is it morally wrong to download it without paying for it?
Technically it isn’t stealing, because you aren’t taking something physical from someone: it’s not like stealing a CD from a shop. It is copyright infringement which is illegal, but should even that be illegal?
And my second question:
What does this mean for the music industry?
Fans and those who want a CD of the music and don’t feel happy illegally downloading will still buy it, but lots will just rip it from youtube and stick it on their MP3 player for nothing. So why should record companies spend a fortune getting albums made in the most expensive studios, get the best producer in the world (Brian Eno) to produce it and then market it, when lots of people are just going to take it for nothing? Or perhaps you think it would be better if they didn’t.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers, Tom.
Green agenda. A con?
Is the green agenda just a con practised by governments to collect taxes, and by others that have jumped on the band-wagon, to line their own pockets?
If there is any truth in the statements made that the cause is co2 emissions, the fact that the United Kingdom only produces less than 2% of the world total would suggest that, should we stop producing co2 emissions by banning all and everything that produces this gas, excepting those that are a necessity to keep the UK from grinding to a halt, there would be no noticeable affect on the world total.
2% of China's emissions, 2% of India's emissions or 2% of the USA's emissions, would make a major difference.
Did Jesus Really Exist?
Perhaps this award-winning video has the answer!
Just curious
Hey, does any know what sort of daily or weekly time commitment a vegetable garden takes? I'm thinking enough food for four people with maybe four or five different vegetables. Just a passing thought really.
Employment Law?
Any one know anything about employment law? Specifically holiday entitlement. I left a job which I had for 14 months. It was an ongoing temporary contract through an agency. Hours were varied but from September 07 to March 08 I worked 12 hours per week. From April to 6 May I worked 7 hours per week. As far as I can recall I haven't had any paid time off since September, when I had 12 hours off.
I left on 6 May. Now surely I must have accumulated some holiday entitlement. Since I didn't take it, then surely I must be owed some holiday pay, even if it only works out at a few hours. I have received nothing - zilch, bugger all.
Despite me leaving on 6 May, I have only today got my P45. I have had to ask them twice for the P45. As far as I was aware I left on good terms. I gave 4 weeks notice, even though I was only required to give 1 week. I worked on 6 May (the day after the bank holiday) as a favour, because I promised to work that day weeks and weeks before. The first time I rang and asked for my P45 I also asked about holiday pay. I didn't get a straight answer and it would appear that it has now been conveniently forgotten. I'm really annoyed with the way they've treated me as the holidays and P45 should have been done along with the final pay.
What IS the definition of Jazz?
I was bought up in a heavy Jazz background, and you learn to recognize when Jazz is being played - but it has escaped most people to be able to define exactly what Jazz is. Anyone care to try? Anyone care?
How do you do a handbrake turn?
In my list of things 'to do' one of these days, is a handbrake turn. So my question is this - have any of you ever done one of these? (on private ground of course, not the public highway
Perish the thought that I would ever suggest anything like that....
).
Is it fun? And how do you do them?
Probably I'll never have the nerve to try it, (like hot-wiring the car, another 'to do' of mine) but it'd be interesting to learn more about it anyway!
Ludicrous Diversion - Who REALLY Blew Up London?

BLACK BOX PURPOSE?
We always heard and read the news about plane crash. And it's very annoying that people died in what they called that flying is so safe. I just wondering about this indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff? I know it may sounds unconforming and kind of philosophical argument, but why?
Crime & Punishment
In my post I did not advocate capital punishment (although sometimes after hearing what people have done makes me want them executed). My post was to see what views others held and the answer was quite clear. All the people who replied to my post are of the same opinion; capital punishment is not the answer.
So the death penalty is out, and so is public flogging we are far to civilised to do that sort of thing. Community service seems to be the only option, for minor offences community service over number of weekends would probably suffice, for more serious offences then a custodial sentence along with community service would be acceptable.
As for the work they do, yes it has to be productive; cleaning our parks for instance would be great idea, the local council does not have the resources to clean these areas leave it to the convicted criminal, he gets punished and the public gets a service.
Only one problem it’s been tired and doesn’t seem to have any effect, so what do we try next, the prisons are full, capital punishment is a non starter, and community service does not work. It looks like a no win situation.
Any ideas?
Crystal Skulls
They seem to be everywhere. Does someone know what it is about these crystal skulls?
Jonathan Ross
Does he merit being paid £6M a year , or about £120,000 per week courtesy of tv license payers ? :
Do you think that he is :
( a ) A brilliant , naturally gifted , stylish and witty presenter who is well worth every penny of that , probably more , and if he left the BBC he'd immediately be offered far more than that by itv , channel 4 , Sky or whoever .
( b ) He's a good , established , professional broadcaster , but his huge wage packet cannot be justified out of mandatory public funds , or
( c ) No , he's awful , and that the bbc try to justify paying him that out of licence-payers money is just obscene .
I know which answer I'd give , but first I'd love to what you think , ? . .
