Why do some Scots hate the English ?

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2008-05-14 - 22:23:29

Why do some Scots ( and some Welsh and Irish ) feel  that they hate 'the english' ?
Is it that they've never been to England , and imagine that we are all mega-rich , ultra-snooty Lords and Ladies , living in Stately Homes or Castles ?
I am yet to meet any english folk who say that they hate the scots ( or welsh or irish ) .
Perhaps I should be glad that Rangers lost tonight ; I'm not , though I admit I'm glad when that silly boy Andy Murray , who , two years ago said he was 'supporting' whoever england were playing against in the Football World Cup , loses his tennis matches .
I've heard that Glasgow can be a dangerous place to be for 'sassenach's ' .
I know that by no means all Scots ( or welsh and Irish ) 'hate' the english , but there's no doubt that some feel that they do , which seems extremely peurile , juvenile and silly to me . .

It's to do with being governed by England for so long.

It's quite simple. These other nations have a sense of national pride, heritage and patriotism, and we do not have these things, for good reason.

As an Englishman who has lived and worked in Scotland for 50 years I can honestly say that I have never come up against any nastiness. Yes, of course work mates made several comments when there was anything that was Scotland versus England and I retaliated by making the biggest rosette that I could with the word England written on it.

O K, I have heard comments made against England and the English but mostly by those that have drunk too much, unfortunately there are too many that do that, and by the type of idiot that every country has, and again, unfortunately, by those like Murray that actually have spent their life in Spain or some other foreign country.

Thanks Trevor , I did'nt realise that you're English , all the best , ~ Martin .

Sorry Slosh, 'hate' is a very strong word and I'm not sure the question is valid. Such rivalries as no doubt exist between the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish, probably go in all directions equally and are based on historical and cultural differences as well as perceived personal opinions.
Our society has become such a mish-mash of nationalities now that it is almost impossible to really know where anyone comes from. In a few generations we will all look the same, a sort of browny-yellowy grey colour, speaking a universal common anglo-afro-asian language or grunting text-speak. C U later m8!

I had the pleasure of sharing a house for a year in Mexico with an Irish/American. He was a bit of a loon, and hastily proceeded to blame me, as i am English, for the potatoe famine and the resulting exodus of Ireland.
Despite my best efforts to persuade him that he was in fact American, not Irish, as he and a few generations of his family were actually born in the land of the free, and that as i wasn't born until the latter half of the 20th century so therefore couldn't be held responsible, he would have none of it and continued with his tyrade. Apparantly catholic schools in and around the immigration areas were still (and possibly still are?) teaching about the dreadful way in which the irish were starved, and demonstrated by making the children eat grass- these were nuns and priests!Hmmmm, i will reserve comment on that part.
As for the welsh and scots- we do have a very sorded history when it comes to land ownership, but sadly these Scots, Irish and welsh don't seem to realise that as much as the hierarchy in Englansd were persecting them, they were indeed crapping all over the peasants and lower beings in England too. These people were power hungry and couldn't have cared a jot about the lesser human being.
Prejudice is a learned thing, it follows through generation after generation, and we all implant the next generation with our fears and hates.
The tragedy of the English Vs Scots, welsh, Irish issue is that an awful lot of the anti English people actualy live in England- DUH!

Good interesting comment trai.

As a Scot, and Glaswegian at that, it saddens me when I read comments like yours S&V. Glasgow is an extremely cosmopolitan city, full of culture, theatres, opera, ballet etc etc, and has the most beautiful buildings in Europe. The city has been in the process of regeneration for decades, and the "Old Lady" is actually extremely hip these days. We welcome people in a way gew other cities can aspire to, and there are incredibly famous eateries and shopping which rivals any other city in the UK.

Guests come and come back again and again. A large number of English folk live here, and apart from the occasional "leg pull", have integrated incredibly well into our life and culture. We are an honest people, and you have to accept that our honesty can be almost brutal at times, but what you see is what you get.

Yes, there is poverty and some dreadful housing, but the Scottish Government is pouring millions into tackling these problems as Westminster seems to bury its head in the sand.

Forget the yobs in Manchester yesterday. Unfortunately you will find yobs everywhere. In England too, I hear.

Sad, sad, sad, and even sadder - Why do people have to hate people, just because of where they come from - I really hate it when people say " oh, I hate the french etc ".

It really bugs me, lets just all learn to love each other no matter what country we live in.

I've met quite a few English people who hate the Scots... and Welsh and Irish!

It's just pathetic.
