Mediums? Spiritualists? Fake?

by joebangles @ 2008-05-08 - 22:28:45

Spiritualists and Mediums. I don't know, what I do know is that there is no scientific proof of their ability to contact "The other side". I have seen stage "magicians" doing the same thing and admitting that it was a trick, but this does not prove that the others are tricksters.

Are they genuine? Any proof? Even if they are fakes does it matter if others get a peace of mind from listening to them? Do they cause harm?

Who knows...We saw Derek Acora last year and he had a message for my nan from her husband who died 45 odd years ago!! To this day she is still quite spooked about it, he got alot of details correct in how he died. Going to see Colin Fry next month so the jury is out until then....

Hi justnic, yes, "spooked" is not really a way of helping anyone in my opinion, I watch Colin Fry on Living TV and he does seem to say many things that are pretty general and could be accepted as facts about most people, but again, he comes up with some surprising little bits every now and then, but, we are never shown his failures.

My husband is a medium - that said, he never takes money and views his gift as a bit of a mixed blessing. It certainly can take a lot out of him.

Undoubtedly there are fakes out there, there are also a lot of genuine people with real abilities. All this could be construed as evidence... but for some people, no matter how much evidence there is, they will never accept it as proof.

But I know with my husband that he gets so much information right about people he has never met that even those who start off feeling sceptical tend to end up believing him.

Hi tylluan, Yes, I have tried to keep an open mind on the subject of mediums, but at the moment remain sceptical, I have seen Derren Brown on the television achieve the same results after admitting that it was a trick and this adds to my doubts.

Many, and probably most, seem to make a great amount of money out of their "skill" and I think that it must be rare to come across someone like your husband that does not take money.

I do believe that there are lots of people like myself that wish that this could be true but as that requires faith in the mediums ability and there appears no credible scientific proof we find it difficult.

Of course I understand that it's very difficult. I've seen mediums on the TV and doubted whether they're genuine. But I've also seen my husband walk into a place he's never been before (for example, a pub) and ask 'Does the name XYZ' (note he will give a full name, even sometimes a middle name, not the 'something beginning with H' stuff that so often occurs on TV.

In the case I'm thinking of, it turned out that the person XYZ was once a regular of the pub, many years before, who had actually died in the bar!

Remember that what you see on TV are often not the best mediums, only the best showmen! THere is a HUGE difference!

I believe that there is some things we cannot explain. I know there are a lot of fakes out there but are also some genuine mediums. I wouldnt pay anyone but very often go to Spiritualist Church and keep an open mind.

Hi murph, I agree that we should try to keep an open mind on this subject, and in this world there must be a lot of things that we do not understand.

My main problem is that I have seen the same thing done as a stage trick, just to entertain, and heard a scientific explanation for how it was done, I like proof.

I understand what you're saying, Joe but maybe it would help to look at it from a slightly different angle : I have seen actors pretend to die in films - just because I know they will get up when the cameras stop rolling, and go on to act in another film, doesn't mean they will live forever. They too, like all of us, will die one day. Also, just because I've seen someone 'die' on stage, doesn't mean people cannot die in real life.

A stage trick - like acting - is just that, an act.

But the real thing is out there, even if we sometimes have to look very hard for it.

Like you, I like proof. The problem of course, is that there's lots of evidence and at some point we have to make the leap and say, yes, we have enough evidence to call that proof.

jibrish it may sound but here is my explanation.
Spirituality was in every religion of the world, and still is.
In Islamic theology, there are considered to be three types of creatures.creatures made of matter (Humans, animals, trees, fish etc).Creatures made of light or photons (the angels),and creatures made up of a mixture of matter and energy(fire).
The light creatures and the fire creatures have very long lives, and have seen humanity from it's dawn. They can tell us a lot about our past.Plus the light creatures have access to the galactic data bank, which in our theology is called "Lauh" it is a creature that has all the information about everything in the universe. From there they can read for us humans and tell us about the future.

Yes there are a few downright fraudulent fakes , and maybe some are just very intuitive , telepathic even . . .
If some people can see into the future , why do'nt they all become very wealthy from correctly predicting lottery , or racing results . . .
But from all the anectdotal evidence I've heard I do believe that there are genuine psychic mediums and as someone else said , some people will never believe that , no matter what happens .
It must be easy if 'performing' to an audience to come up with generalisations which must apply to some there .
But if someone consults a medium privately , who they have no previous connection with , and if the medium comes up with a lot of very specifically accurate stuff , that must strongly point to something paranormally explicable - And I'm sure not all mediums have the resources to research everyone who makes an appointment with them , especially if some clients only supply their first names !
I have heard a supposed 'materialisation medium' speak on the radio , who claims that he and others can actually physically bring back those that have died , to their loved ones , for a limited time , which does sound very dubious and , if dishonest , a cruel hoax , though I once looked at an internet site about that , which claimed that scientifically proven avidence of that has been deliberately supressed ;
I'm open-minded about many things , but that does seem to be stretching plausibility too far . .
Interesting question , and good debate .
