Hi safriz, I think that our impression of the Amish people has been coloured by what we have seen in films and TV dramas, keeping in mind that they are just entertainment who, other than the Amish people know the truth.
Somebody saw the opportunity to cash in on there styles, particularly furniture, and also spread what may be a false impression.
I have no grounds for my suspicion that the Mormans' have an ulterior motive in many things that they do. -

Not at all
Amish people derive from strict protestant Puritanism who left Europe for religious freedom in the New World (America). They are strict protestants - Anabaptists, but they must be divergent of most others otherwise they wouldn't have left - they were facing persecution from both Catholics and Protestants. They believe that the level of technological advancement achieved in the 17th Century is sufficient for humans - no electricity, motor vehicles or steam power. They believe is a strict interpretation of the Bible, are non-political, pacifists. I am not sure what their requirements are for entering heaven (many strict Protestants believed in a pre-chosen few that would see heaven). They live mostly in Pennsylvania (like Quakers) and speak a German/Dutch dialect.
Mormons derive their Christianity from American Protestants (Baptists and Lutherans) but they believe that there are still Prophets and Saints in this world, one of whom was Joseph Smith, founder (Hence the correct name 'The Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints). Joseph Smith wrote a divinly inspired book called The Book of Mormon which is written very much in the style of the Old Testament, but is in English (which is bizarre seeing as the Bible we know was written first in Hebrew, then translated into Greek and finally English). The book describes all sorts, one of the most important events described in that Jesus also visited America during his time on Earth. They have all sorts of beliefs (Polygamy is least important and practiced but the most talked about). They believe that access to Heaven is only achieved by becoming a Mormon. They are based mostly around Salt Lake City in Utah - although they are one of the fastest growing religions (they were banished to Salt Lake as everyone else thought they were crazy - Joseph Smith was killed in a riot), they dress smart, are extremely polite and are active evangelisers. They do not intake ANY kind of drug so no tea, coffee, cigarettes etc.
Mormons are not considered Christians by most Christians as there is way too much that is different.
Hope that helps, didn't write too much in case i started to diverge from the truth.
