How much is too much?

by trintrin1x @ 2008-05-07 - 12:04:54

Well i'm getting my moneys worth out of this group aren't i? :))

Seriously though, what i want to ask is how much Dig Money do u think i should take off my 16 year old daughter Natalie?
Thats her been working 13 weeks and i haven't charged her any yet.  I wasn't going to but someone said to me that is not going to teatch her anything in life, and when i thought about it, they were right.
She only works part time on average about 30 hours a week and gets on average about £120....What do u think is a fair amount?

When i started work at 16 i was on a YTS scheme and got £27.50 a week working full time, as soon as i had my first wage my dad was taking £10 a week off me!  I pay for her internet connection and i have to fight with her to get on the computer, the sooner she saves up for a laptop the better, she says she doesn't want to have any less than £300 in her acount, maybe she is just being good with money or maybe she is just as tight as a ducks arse! :)) x

i would take 30% of the income. It will do a few things:

Make her face a realistic budget (for when she moves out) so that she will cope in the real world.
Then without her knowing keep 15%, and secretly stashed the other 15% so she has a small "nest egg" when she moves out.

That way, when she moves, she will have a bit of cash to buy stuff...

just a thought

is she likely to fight against it, or will she hand it over willingly, do you think?
i think jack's about right, but if you are a bit short of the readies, use the full amount to cut your own costs!

No she will give me it if i ask, she already gives me money towards petrol if i ask for it, i am skint but wouldn't take all of it off her, she has earned it working all week. :) x

A tricky one. I wonder what amount Natalie might suggest if you asked her at a very carefully chosen time.

Looking back, I had no trouble with our four teenagers as I was very careful not to be involved in any of the negotiations , if there were any - lol.

Housekeeping and day to day budgeting were completely in the hands of the wise one - lol.

I'm not able to make any suggestions on that question Trin but the comments that you have received seem very sensible.

I suppose that it will depend on whether she buys her own clothes and other necessities, pays her own mobile phone, generally helps out with household chores, if she does her bit to help you.

This is a very topical matter for westerners; the above suggestions are all inspirable and may help in some way. My understanding is that, it all rely on the way she grew up. How have you been dealing with her regarding financial, householding and self-drive issues, both at home and outside. Is it too late now? as she is 16? Upon how respecful she is to you and how often and how much she listens to her dad, you can still catch up through discussions at the-right-time-and-places. She lives, works and meet new friends. She has therefore learnt a lot, if not much from them than from you. I wouldn't suggest anything but wonder with you: Is she aware of what life would be without loving and caring parents, without a reasonnable strong social and economical background? if Yes, how far has she got with that? If not, then lets sit and have serious chat ( daddy/daugher)
