Burma's Rulers Appalling Lethargy

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2008-05-07 - 20:25:01

Can anyone explain why Burma's Military Rulers are being dithering and obstructive of accepting desperately needed and readily available foreign humanitarian  assistance , following the urgent and worsening catastrophe of  the  huge loss of life , and devastation of much of the south of their country , brought about by a cyclone , which , incidentally , they seem to have ignored warnings of , the other day ?
Yes  they are probably corrupt , caring nothing for their people and suspicious of foreigners , but is the reason for their lethargy in the face of this horrendously unfolding  crisis really as simple as that ?
I recall that even North Korea accepted outside help following , I think it was , an awful train crash there a while back .

That's a great question S&V, I don't have the answer but do hope that someone can explain, it seems impossible to understand.

thats simply how it works..
the ussr bein silent about chernobyl, china about bird flu fatalities, north korea about half of the population starving, etc..
you can list loads of examples..
if you build your regime on fear and spend decades to make ppl fear you and be silent then you just ruin that if you admit you are not omnipotent and you actually need help sometimes..
so who cares if tens of thousands die if you can say in power?
sad but simple..
