Whould Shakespeare have?

by joebangles @ 2008-05-04 - 11:39:22

Would William Shakespeare have had a "Brummie" accent?

Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against accents. As someone that still has a Sussex accent after 40 years of living amongst Glaswegians I soon learnt that any "cracks" that came my way were meant in fun.

Shakespeare lived in the Birmingham area, he must have had an accent, so why do "Actors" all speak in what they call "A Shakespearean voice"?

I think that's the other Shakespeare you are thinking about, Albert "Pearly" Shakespeare.

Shakespeare lived twenty odd miles from Birmingham in North Warwickshire I would have thought that his accent might have bordered on Gloucestershire or Worcestershire. The Birmingham accent is always thought of as Black country which anyone from the Dudley area will tell you is not "Brummie" The modern "Brummie" accent is more likely to have an Asian twang.

And then of course, there are always a few diehards who will tell you that the 'real' Shakespeare (as opposed to an ersatx one???) was Welsh.

Now there's a thought.....;)

apparentlythe 'original' queens english is more like the 'brummie' accent from around West Brom, not what we hear now. True or not i dunno but its from a reputable source lol

Hi rainbowdreams, your reputable source is possibly right and it developed from the original grunts as made by the cavemen, did you check out the link that was given in one of the comments, http://www.shakespeareswords.com/audioSample.asp
it's quite interesting.
