Why are many billions of pounds / dollars / euro's being spent on investigating whether there was once life on mars , billions of years ago , and if there's water there , and on plans to send humans to live there , within 20+ years or so , though it's a perilous six month journey , the air is unbreathable to humans , and it's very , very cold there ?
I know it's quite interesting , but with all the poverty on this planet , why the necessity to know ?
Someone on the radio this morning said because it's our 'sister planet' , and because it's of 'philosophical' interest - Eh ?
Is it to do with some very long-term plan to make life there sustainable for a colony of humans , in the eventual ,  far away likelihood of earth becoming uninhabitable ?
Or is there some other reason for all the investment into exploring mars which we're not being told of ?

The UK Government gave much thought during this week to the question of abortion.

Their deliberations resulted in the law permitting abortions up until the 24th week. ( my personal view is that abortions should be available and legal but not that late in the pregnancy except on the advice of a medical doctor ) Does it require that amount of time to consider abortion in a normal pregnancy. Say, 4 weeks to confirm, 4 weeks to consider and discuss, 4 weeks to arrange the termination, total 12 weeks.

Why 24 weeks? Why not, say, 12 weeks?

I was watching a BBc documentary about cold fusion.Here is the link for the video.I posted it in my second blog.
The BBC people refused to accept that this scientist created nuclear fusion because they could not detect any neutrons at the exact moment when the photon of energy was detected.
My question is,do the neutrons travel at the speed of light?If not,how can the photons which are traveling at the speed of light and the neutrons can be detected at the exact same moment?

Is the lack of jobs the reason for the young hoodlums that roam our streets and cause trouble?

Yes they are a minority of the young, but a very noticeable minority by their very actions. It is unfortunate that all teenagers are tarred with the same brush, but, that minority appears to be moving to a majority as it increases with the end of each school year.

In my day, and admittedly a long time ago, you left school on the Friday and commenced work on the following Monday, you immediately moved to an adult society and learned to live amongst adults, but more than that, at the end of each week you received a wage, you had some money in your pocket.

If every youngster could be found employment immediately upon leaving school, thus a wage, would this make a difference?

For many years now there has been a "Black Police Officers Association", I now read of plans to form a "Asian Police Officers Association", maybe there are others?

Does this cause divisions in our police force?

I do not want any of them. I want a Police Officer where the race, religion, sex, or anything else, even height, is of no importance at all. I want men and woman that can do the job of protecting the people of this country and catch criminals.

Recently I read about a group of women that sold their sexual services to disabled men, many of these men could not envisage a sexual relationship with a woman in any other circumstances.

Are these ladies providing a necessary service?
Have they just found a way of making money?
Is it a form of abuse?
Are they right or wrong?

The market in herbal medicines and treatments is worth many millions of pounds, all herbal products have written on the label and in their advertising, "MAY help.....".

Why has there been no full scale testing of these products?

Why do the ingredients vary so much in similar products?

Why does the price vary so much in similar products?

Why does the NHS not use them as alternatives to their present drugs?

A lifetime behind bars, is considered by most people as being the rightful sentence for anyone that commits murder, that is usually the crime that receives the longest prison sentence handed down by the courts.

I contend that a far greater crime is committed in the case of rape and this should be considered as worthy of a life sentence as murder.

Of course, the murdered person is dead, and usually leaves behind grieving family, but, the person that has been raped remains to live for the rest of their life carrying the pains of the memory of that occasion, the victim, the innocent party, is the one that often carries the life sentence, and this, where the victim of the rape is a child, can be for the next 70 years

Whenever I encounter someone new, either socially, on TV, or even passing them in the street, I form an instant opinion about them based purely on what I see and hear. I mentally grade them somewhere between "highly attractive" and "grossly repulsive". This may of course change when, and if, I ever get to know them better.
I assume other people make similar off-the-cuff and possibly irrational judgements.
My questions are: Do we all apply the same set of rules when deciding who we like or dislike? And what ARE the rules?

Why do some Scots ( and some Welsh and Irish ) feel  that they hate 'the english' ?
Is it that they've never been to England , and imagine that we are all mega-rich , ultra-snooty Lords and Ladies , living in Stately Homes or Castles ?
I am yet to meet any english folk who say that they hate the scots ( or welsh or irish ) .
Perhaps I should be glad that Rangers lost tonight ; I'm not , though I admit I'm glad when that silly boy Andy Murray , who , two years ago said he was 'supporting' whoever england were playing against in the Football World Cup , loses his tennis matches .
I've heard that Glasgow can be a dangerous place to be for 'sassenach's ' .
I know that by no means all Scots ( or welsh and Irish ) 'hate' the english , but there's no doubt that some feel that they do , which seems extremely peurile , juvenile and silly to me . .

My uncle (who is my Dad's younger brother) and his wife are due to have a baby in a few months time.

Me and the other half were discussing how this baby is in relation to my son! (As my dad wants to know and cannot fugure it out!) The OH said our son would be a half-cousin!? (I said Uncle jokingly!) And I would be this Baby's Cousin!?

Sounds confusing! But I am serious!

Was attempting to have a discussion the other day about Capital Punishment (that old chesnut). Here's the deal:
Is it more ethical to keep someone alive in order for them to serve punishment for the rest of their life in a prison, or to simply execute them?

It seems to me that a large part of the argument against Capital Punishment is the idea that we do not have a right to take away someone's life (outside of war and self defence). However, the alternative - giving somebody life imprisonment - seems just as extreme. There has been a whole spate of programs on TV about the world's hardest prisons. Are these places actually helping? They are certainly not rehabilitating the offenders.
So the conclusion is (and the person with whom I had the discussion admitted this freely) that we keep them alive because 'death is too easy.' Call me naive, but I was under the impression that civilization and 1500 years of the English Judicial System came to more than simply physically retaliating in this way towards offenders.
There is the argument that the reason for the abandonment of Capital Punishment is due to the seculrisation of this (and other) countries. That is, because there is not that strong belief in the after-life, punishments dealt to offenders must be carried out in THIS lifetime rather than the next. Previously, had a horrific crime been committed than the person was sentenced to death, given the chance to repent then executed.
What do you guys think? Recent polls in this country seem to suggest that people DO want a return to Capital Punishment, the main argument against it being the devastation if/when a mistake is made and an innocent man is killed.

I was just wondering , Why do a few ladies on this 'blog site claim to be in their 70's or 80's when they are actually much younger than that ?
- And no I'm not assuming all people of that age group to be computer illiterate . . .
- And yes they have every right to claim to be much older , but . . 
-Is it because they think that , if they reveal their true age , male users of this site will pester them ?
- And if so does that happen much to women here ? -

Spiritualists and Mediums. I don't know, what I do know is that there is no scientific proof of their ability to contact "The other side". I have seen stage "magicians" doing the same thing and admitting that it was a trick, but this does not prove that the others are tricksters.

Are they genuine? Any proof? Even if they are fakes does it matter if others get a peace of mind from listening to them? Do they cause harm?

Can anyone explain why Burma's Military Rulers are being dithering and obstructive of accepting desperately needed and readily available foreign humanitarian  assistance , following the urgent and worsening catastrophe of  the  huge loss of life , and devastation of much of the south of their country , brought about by a cyclone , which , incidentally , they seem to have ignored warnings of , the other day ?
Yes  they are probably corrupt , caring nothing for their people and suspicious of foreigners , but is the reason for their lethargy in the face of this horrendously unfolding  crisis really as simple as that ?

Seriously though, what i want to ask is how much Dig Money do u think i should take off my 16 year old daughter Natalie?
Thats her been working 13 weeks and i haven't charged her any yet.  I wasn't going to but someone said to me that is not going to teatch her anything in life, and when i thought about it, they were right.
She only works part time on average about 30 hours a week and gets on average about £120....What do u think is a fair amount?

When i started work at 16 i was on a YTS scheme and got £27.50 a week working full time, as soon as i had my first wage my dad was taking £10 a week off me!  I pay for her internet connection and i have to fight with her to get on the computer, the sooner she saves up for a laptop the better, she says she doesn't want to have any less than £300 in her acount, maybe she is just being good with money or maybe she is just as tight as a ducks arse! x

Every time i use the computer after a while, it always comes up "   internet has encountered a problem and will have to close down" and if u are in the middle of something like writing a post, its gone, again as computer illiterate as i am, i thought it was the computer doing this but natalie explained it was the internet, does this happen to anyone else? what causes it?

If you watch BBC program Dragon's den,there was a man who came with his innovative sauce and music.
The dragons supported his idea,but sill i can't find any superstore retailing his product.I have heard that some store is selling raggae raggae sauce,but couldn't find anywhere.

Would William Shakespeare have had a "Brummie" accent?

Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against accents. As someone that still has a Sussex accent after 40 years of living amongst Glaswegians I soon learnt that any "cracks" that came my way were meant in fun.

Shakespeare lived in the Birmingham area, he must have had an accent, so why do "Actors" all speak in what they call "A Shakespearean voice"?

It seems to me women who sell their bodies are abusing themselves. What do you think?
